Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about your test kit, collection process, and results.

Do I need to register my kit before collecting my sample?

Yes β€” registration is required before collection. Samples received without completed registration may be rejected by the lab. Open the Boomerang Kits App, tap Register Kit, and scan the QR code on the instruction card inside your box. The whole process takes under 2 minutes.

What is included in my kit?

Your kit contains everything you need to collect and return your sample:

  • Blood Separator Card (for finger-prick tests)
  • Lancet device
  • Alcohol wipe
  • Bandage
  • Specimen bag with absorbent pad
  • Pre-addressed, pre-paid return mailer
  • Instruction card

Genomic and swab-based tests include a collection swab, dry collection tube, and specimen label instead of the blood card and lancet.

How do I collect a finger-prick blood sample?

Follow these steps carefully:

  • Prepare: Print your name, date of birth, and collection date on the Blood Separator Card. Wash and thoroughly dry your hands.
  • Prick: Clean your fingertip with the alcohol wipe. Twist off the lancet cap and press firmly on the side of your fingertip.
  • Collect: Gently massage your finger to form 4–5 large drops. Apply each drop to a separate circle on the card without touching the card surface.
  • Dry: Lay the card flat and let it air dry for a full 60 minutes before packaging.
  • Mail: Place the dried card in the specimen bag, seal it, put it in the prepaid mailer, and drop it in any USPS mailbox.
Why is the 60-minute drying time important?

The blood card must air dry for a full 60 minutes before you package it. Sealing a wet card traps moisture, which can degrade the sample and cause lab rejection. Do not use heat, direct sunlight, or a hair dryer to speed up drying β€” air drying at room temperature is the only correct method.

What if blood flow slows or stops during collection?

If blood slows, try these steps:

  • Gently massage your hand downward from palm to fingertip to encourage flow.
  • Let your arm hang down for 30 seconds to increase blood flow.
  • Warm your hand under warm water for a minute before retrying.
  • Use a different finger if needed.

Do not squeeze the fingertip hard β€” this can dilute the sample with tissue fluid.

Can I collect my sample at any time of day?

For most panels, morning collection is recommended β€” ideally before eating or drinking anything other than water. Some hormones (like cortisol) fluctuate throughout the day, so collecting between 7–10 AM gives the most accurate baseline reading. Your kit instructions will specify if your particular test has timing requirements.

How do I collect a cheek swab for genomic tests?

Cheek swab collection is used for all DNA and genomic panels:

  • Do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum for at least 30 minutes before collecting.
  • Open the swab and firmly rub the inside of your cheek for 30–60 seconds.
  • Insert the swab tip into the dry collection tube.
  • Break the swab at the marked breakpoint and screw the lid on firmly until fully sealed.
  • Apply the specimen label to the tube, place it in the specimen bag, and seal it completely before mailing.
Are there any conditions where I should not collect my sample?

Postpone collection if any of the following apply:

  • You are currently ill, have a fever, or are on antibiotics β€” this can affect certain biomarkers.
  • You have consumed alcohol in the past 24 hours (especially for hormone and metabolic panels).
  • You have had strenuous exercise in the last 24 hours (for testosterone and inflammatory markers).
  • You are currently using topical hormone creams or gels β€” apply and collect at specific intervals noted in your kit instructions.

For swab-based collection tests, do not collect if you have had intercourse within 24 hours, are currently experiencing your menstrual period, or have used personal care products in the hour before collection.

When will my results be ready?

Results are typically available within 24–48 hours from the time the lab receives your sample. You'll receive an email notification as soon as they're ready. You can then view your full results in the Boomerang Kits App or on our website.

Genomic panels may take up to 5–7 business days due to the additional DNA analysis process.

What do my results mean? How do I read them?

Each result shows your measured value alongside the optimal reference range. Results are color-coded:

  • Green / Optimal β€” your value falls within the healthy reference range.
  • Orange / Low or High β€” your value is outside the reference range and may warrant attention.

Each biomarker includes a plain-English description of what it measures and why it matters. For any results outside the normal range, we recommend discussing them with your healthcare provider.

Can I share my results with my doctor?

Yes. You can download a clinician-ready PDF of your results directly from the Boomerang Kits App with one tap. This PDF includes all biomarker values, reference ranges, and collection date β€” everything your doctor needs for professional review.

Why might my sample be rejected by the lab?

The most common reasons for sample rejection are:

  • Kit was not registered before collection.
  • Blood card was packaged before completing the full 60-minute drying time.
  • Insufficient blood β€” fewer than 4 complete circles filled on the card.
  • Sample was contaminated (card was touched, exposed to moisture or extreme heat).
  • Collection date on card was missing or illegible.

If your sample is rejected, contact our support team and we will send a replacement kit at no charge.

How often should I retest?

For most panels, retesting every 3–6 months gives you meaningful trend data. The app tracks all your results over time so you can see what's changing. If you've recently started a new supplement, medication, or lifestyle change, retesting after 8–12 weeks lets you measure its impact objectively.

Do I need the app to use my kit?

You need to register your kit before collecting your sample β€” this can be done through the Boomerang Kits App (iOS or Android) or through our website at boomerangkits.com. After registration, you can view your results in the app or online. The app also lets you track trends across multiple tests and set retest reminders.

How do I register my kit in the app?

After downloading the app and creating your account:

  • Tap Register Kit on the home screen.
  • Tap Scan QR Code and point your camera at the QR code on the instruction card inside your kit box.
  • Confirm your name and collection date.
  • Tap Register β€” you're set to collect.

You can also enter the kit ID manually if you have trouble scanning.

Is my health data private and secure?

Yes. Your data is end-to-end encrypted and stored securely. We never sell your personal health information to third parties or advertisers. Only you can access your results β€” not even Boomerang Kits staff can view your individual test data without your explicit consent.

Does my kit come with a return label?

Yes. Every kit includes a pre-addressed, pre-paid USPS return mailer. You don't need to purchase postage or go to a post office. Simply seal your packaged sample in the mailer and drop it in any USPS mailbox or hand it to a mail carrier.

Does insurance cover at-home lab testing?

Boomerang Kits tests are currently not processed through insurance. However, many tests are eligible for reimbursement through HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) cards β€” you can use these at checkout. We recommend checking with your HSA/FSA provider for confirmation.

Do I need a doctor's order or prescription?

No. All Boomerang Kits tests are available directly to consumers β€” no doctor visit, referral, or prescription required. You can order any panel on our website and receive your results independently. We do recommend sharing out-of-range results with a licensed healthcare provider for professional guidance.

What is your refund or replacement policy?

If your sample is rejected by the lab for any reason we consider within our control (lab processing issues, kit defects), we will send a free replacement kit. If your sample is rejected due to collection errors (insufficient blood, packaging before drying, unregistered kit), please contact our support team β€” we review these on a case-by-case basis and work to make it right.
